Song for Sunday - 4th Dec - Slow Down

It's December already but I'm not ready yet for wintery things - so here is a video with lots of sunshine.

Slow Down is the latest single from Brandon Stansell. Stansell is currently working on a full length album but in the meantime this single and his previous EP Dear John are well worth a listen.

The next two Song's for Sunday will be collections of songs from across this year. So you can use your holiday time wisely by watching the best of the music from 2016.

Indiana Queen - a queer folk/country group - have released a 'visual album' that includes a set of bittersweet love songs accompanied by some very revealing and flesh infused videos (so don't go watching them on the bus or subway). The album is Summon Without Sorrow and this is part 7 - Be My Man.

Song for Sunday - 20th Nov - On The Downlow

Jack O'Rourke is an Irish singer-songwriter whose first album Dreamcatcher has recently been released, and from it comes this song. On The Downlow is a song that describes how difficult it can be to sustain a relationship when one of the partners is confident in private but less so in public.

Song For Sunday - 30th Oct - Fucked Up

Leo Kalyan is like someone from a Con Riley novel - a gay, Brit, muslim, musician. And a brilliant one at that. This song is from his recent EP Outside In (something you should go buy) is perfection. Although the video is all faffing about with metaphor the song itself if a piece of pop joy.

As the news has all been a bit... well you know what it's been, so I won't go there... I thought a little Indie Pop would do us all good. Here is Brendan Maclean with his song from this summer Free To Love.

Song for Sunday - 4th Sep - Blue Neighbourhood Trilogy

Here's a little love story for a Sunday morning - in honour of those attending the #UKMeet this weekend in Southampton.
The Blue Neighbourhood Trilogy by Troye Sivan has been given a Director's Cut that brings them together into one story. It's a great set of pop songs and a rather brilliant video too. So go grab a coffee and settle down for 12 minutes of teenage angst put to music (YA writers take particular note).

Hendrik is a gay Faroese singer (although he currently lives in Iceland). You don't get many of those - I reckon - so I thought it best to celebrate not just his very existence but also his art. Here is Change of Frame, a catchy little song, possibly from his forthcoming album, for a Sunday morning.

Here's a rather lovely song - and even better video - for your Sunday pleasure. Lyon Hart has created a low key electro-pop song and matched it with some stunning visuals of a couple in their everyday setting.

Song for Sunday is going to be a bit sporadic for a while - I'm a man with things to do and places to be apparently, so it'll happen when I can do it. So to lift some spirits here's a bit of perfect pop for your Sunday pleasure.

Bright Light, Bright Light has just released his third studio album and this is even better than what's come before (and the previous albums were good). Symmetry of Two Hearts is a great piece of summer pop, so open the windows, line up a G&T and enjoy

Song for Sunday - 17th Jul - Arrow

To make up for the absence last week you get a two-in-one this week. You get both a great song - The Irrepressibles with Arrow - and you get a beautiful piece of art by Matthew Richardson to go along with it.

Song for Sunday - 3rd July - Color

Todrick Hall has put together an hour long video that's a modern day musical. Straight Outta Oz is his  20 song-long mix of his take on the classic Wizard of Oz and the coming of age tale of a modern black American gay man. You can watch the whole hour long video here (it is totally worth it) and you can buy the album from iTunes and other places (also totally worth it).

Color is the song in the musical that is about the discovery of love and how that helps Todrick discover himself - and is also the transition from black and white to color in the musical - its a perfect tale for a quiet Sunday morning.

Something easy going and simple this week - Parlour Tricks with their song Broken Hearts/Bones.

Song for Sunday - 19th Jun - Pulse

There's only one song I could pick for today. Singer songwriters Brandon Skeie and Eli Lieb put together this song as a tribute to those who were killed and injured in Orlando last week.

Something a little rolling and gentle for this week's song. This Canadian band - Woodpigeon - make indie-pop that sits somewhere between Sufjan Stevens and Belle & Sebastian and sounds lush. Just perfect for a Sunday morning.

As its been all summary and sunny here this week I've chosen something light and breezy for this week's Song for Sunday.
Dalin is an Icelander who works out of New York these days. He creates quite ethereal tinged pop tunes like this one.
I hope it's sunny where you are - if it is then kick off your shoes, lay back and enjoy the warmth of the sun to this song.

Song for Sunday - 29th May - Glow

Glow is a great Song for Sunday choice - the kind of sleepy, happy-sad song that'll have you humming along as it tells its story. Lontalius is a New Zealander who's just released his full album, "I'll Forget 17", which is well worth checking out.

Song for Sunday - 22nd May - Love School

The idea behind Song for Sunday is to bring you LGBT musicians who aren't famous and music from genres that aren't just 'mainstream pop'. So are you ready for a bit of old school rhythm and blues?

Earl Thomas is one of those people who should be way more famous that he is - I mean just listen to that voice. This track - Love School - is from his new album Crow.

Song For Sunday - 15th May - Need U Now

The CooLots are a US queer rock/soul band. Need U Now is a bit of both but leans over to the rock side a bit more. So something a bit different for a Sunday, but welcome all the same.

Song For Sunday - 8th May - Sanctuary

Markus Feehily is the gay one from Westlife (apparently it's a rule that every boyband has to have at least one gay one). Markus has moved on to make his own solo album, which includes this track. The video - the story of a bi man struggling with his attractions - is quite powerful in places, and the song is a good pop song - who can resist a Clannad sample?

Song for Sunday - 1st May - Blue

The intricacies of relationships are a never ending source of musical inspiration - just watch Beyonce slay the whole world with her version. But here is the opposite end of that scale - a UK artist, little known, who has drawn on a break up and instead of Beyonce's fury seems to be quietly accepting as he sings 'it doesn't surprise me'.

Song For Sunday - 24th Apr - Stand By Me/You

Last month I posted a song by Eli Lieb & Steve Grand and commented on how unusual it is to see two gay men duet. Well this week's song goes one step further - a duet by two gay men who are married to each other.
Casey Breves and Sam Tsui are two YouTube based singers who've been working separately for years, and doing the occasional duet on mash-up's (you might remember their mash up of Thinking Out Loud / I'm Not The Only One as its had over 32 million views). Casey & Sam married last week and basically turned themselves into the new Sonny & Cher.

This week's song is their latest collaboration, a mash up of Stand By Me & Stand By You. It's a good choice for a spring Sunday morning.

Matt Doyle is a Broadway singer and fitness instructor - both things that grab my attention, but for very different reasons. He recently released his first album Uncontrolled, from which this song comes. Go take a look at the moody bedroom moments.

Song for Sunday - 10 Apr - Somewhere Along The Way

A little light jazz for a Sunday morning is never a bad thing. This week's song is Somewhere Along The Way by Antoine L Collins - a tale of having the best and letting it slip through your fingers.

Song for Sunday - 3rd Apr - Son Of A Preacher Man

Some songs are difficult to translate from a straight/cis perspective - which is why having LGBT musicians singing about that perspective is so important - yet other songs benefit from it. This version of the classic Son Of A Preacher Man provides the opportunity for an excellent song to be matched with an equally good video. And, as all things in life should, provide a happy ending.

Bonus Song - 29th Mar - Look Away

Its rare enough to hear one out LGBT person sing a song about relationships, particularly the downsides of them. So think how rare it would be for two of them to duet and share a song about how hard it is to recover from a relationship break up.

Well here it is. Eli Lieb (one of my favourites) and Steve Grand have co-written and duetted on this song Look Away. Enjoy.

Indiana Queen have fast become one of my all time favourite bands. This song - I Don't Know What To Do - is from their recently released album I Built A Fire. You really should go get your copy - it's short but great.
The video may be a little bit NSFW, but still it's Sunday morning/afternoon so I'm hoping you're at home relaxing to good music (that is the point of Song for Sunday after all).

Song for Sunday - 20th Mar - Dear John

I'm always partial to an album that takes the listener through different stages of a relationship. Probably the most famous of these is Joni Mitchell's album Both Sides Now (a must have for every music collection). But the latest version of these is the Dear John EP by Brandon Stansell and today's Song for Sunday is the final (and title) track.

Nathan Toure possesses one of the most magnificent voices and here he puts it to great use covering an old New Order track.

Skunk Anansie were one of my favourite 90's bands, with a sound full of passion, anger and barely controlled violence simmering under the surface. They are back with a new album. Although the violence has been subdued (maybe that just happens with age) the anger and passion are still there in Skin's beautiful voice.

There are some voices you could listen to all day. Earl Thomas has one of those - and I probably will be listening to him all today, because why not - and uses it to perfection on this track. This is a great Sunday Song, so hit play and let it hit you.

It's hard to remake a song and make it different and good at the same time. Reigen has managed that though with this version of I Want To Know What Love Is.
It's an electro Sunday sound, but a good one.

Mary Lambert was the one whose song provided the memorable hook for that Macklemore + Lewis song from the other year. Here she is with a new video that is a perfect rhythm for a Sunday - Ribcage is a collaboration between Mary and Angel Haze.
